Nestled in the outskirts of the quiet town of Mill Valley, in Marin County – which is part of the San Francisco Bay Area’s north bay region, is a wonderful little gem known as Muir Woods. It’s an American National Monument, as well.
Named for the 19th century conservation activist John Muir, this park offers serene, gorgeous strolls through ancient, old-growth redwood forests, that feel worlds away from civilization.
Each season at Muir Woods brings it own beauty, and the climate around here is temperate enough to visit year round. There’s plenty of shade provided by the towering trees.

On a sunny day, the sun’s rays look glorious shining through the trees. The redwoods also soak up moisture from the nearby ocean, creating a naturally humid environment within the forest, and watering the wildlife found within.
This is a great place for a solo walk for time to yourself, a romantic hike with someone special, or a hike to bond with good friends, or a fun and memorable place to take the kids and grandkids.
Please note that due to the high popularity of this park, as well as rather limited parking options available nearby, reservations are always required to visit. Shuttle service is also available, helping to reduce traffic, and just enjoy the beautiful views coming up that long, winding road to the park. See here for more details about making a reservation.
For more about visiting Muir Woods, including accessibility information, please see here. Note that there is an accessible parking lot close to the entrance – though reservations are still required first, and there is a large flat, wooden path and seating area in the center of the park – leading between the parking lot, bathrooms, Visitor’s Center, and other trails. America the Beautiful passes are accepted at this location.
